Throughout this Truth of War project we watched many documentaries, read articles and interviewed veterans but the one thing that i really took away was how scary and chaotic war really was. Young adults got drafted to fight for there country and they don't even know the reason. People against people fighting for their lives to see another day. Some of them have families and loved ones. In new terrain that's unfamiliar and dangerous and with a new style of combat, guerrilla warfare that took the soldiers by surprise. It is very scary for both sides of the war. Although the VC had the upper hand by knowing the territory the US kept introducing new technology and weapons. With the birth of napalm the US tried to burn the VC out of hiding. The VC have planted many traps to harm and catch the US soldiers off guard. the three traps that I studied were the punji stick trap, it was a pit with sharpen sticks of bamboo at the bottom with flimsy breakable sticks on the top covering it so soldiers would fall in and get impaled. the next trap that are studied was the mace, it was a basketball size metal ball with metal rods sticking out. That would swing from a tree and impale the head and chest.
In our exhibition we had 6 different rooms each room representing different parts of the vietnam war experience. The first room was the Living room which represented how the people back at the US were seeing the war and how the media was portraying it. The next room was a the soldier in battles experience it was a dark room with trees, traps and fog to set the vibe of vietnam. There were three traps displayed to show what they had to watch out for when walking in combat. The next room was the soldiers emotion in battle. This room was demonstrating the emotions that the u.s. soldiers had to deal with and were going through in battle. It also showed their emotions after the war. Another room was the Vietnam perspective. I gave you of you on the short term and long lasting effects of the Vietnam War. It had All the gear that the Vietnam used in battle. The Next Room was the America divided room this room I kept the perspective of the people that thought the war was not right and unjust. It gave a little glimpse of the hippie movement. in the final room it was the retrospective room. This room gave meaning and wrapped up the whole exhibition..
Throughout this project I got to strengthened my skills. Working in groups you have to have good communication skills. In this project I grew my communication skills when emailing and texting what was needed for the group to succeed. Also there was a lot of work that we had to accomplish and complete. so being able to efficiently tell your group and tell group members what we need to do benefited our final project. We had a lot of group work so i was able to work on my skills. also throughout this project we had a lot of a lot of collaboration with peers so another skill that I grew was my teamwork skills. Being a project-based school and also wanting to go into the field of architect being able to work in a group that can flow and really work well together is essential to creating beautiful work.
The beginning of this project I always thought that war was essential it may not be right or just but it is essential to showing dominance and getting what we need. But after looking back on this project and Gathering all the information that I have now I have realized war is a horrible and unhuman like act. War brings out the worst in people. After listening to the veterans speak about their experiences it makes you wonder why can't we just sit down and discuss things like adults. Instead of having kids with a bright future in a whole life ahead of them go fight for something and lose their life that has no meaning or relevance to them. After this project I now know violence isn't the answer. that you can never fight fire with fire.
